Read your meter like a pro
Submitting your own reading keeps your bill based on actual usage instead of an estimate. It takes about two minutes — here's how to read both dial and digital meters.
Reading a Dial Meter
Four simple rules turn five spinning dials into one accurate number.
- Read left to right. Note the number each pointer indicates, starting with the leftmost dial.
- Between two numbers? Take the lower one. If the pointer sits between 4 and 5, record 4.
- Between 9 and 0 counts as 9. Zero is the top of the cycle, not the bottom.
- Exactly on a number? Check the dial to its right — if that pointer hasn't passed zero, use the lower number.
Digital Displays Are Easier
If your meter has a digital readout, simply record the numbers shown from left to right, ignoring any digits after a decimal point or shown in red. Smart meters send readings automatically — if you have one, there's nothing to submit.
