Gas Safety

Know what’s below — call 811

Fences, decks, mailboxes, tree plantings: any project that breaks ground can strike a buried line. One free call to 811, a few days ahead, gets every utility line marked before your shovel does the finding.

Before You Break Ground

How the free markout works

811 is the national call-before-you-dig service. It is free, it is required by law for most excavation, and it typically takes just a few days.

  1. Contact 811 at least a few business days before you dig — by phone or online.
  2. Utilities mark their lines with color-coded paint and flags at no cost to you.
  3. Respect the marks — hand-dig carefully within the tolerance zone around any marked line.

If You Hit a Line

Stop work, leave the area immediately, and keep others away. If you smell gas or hear hissing, do not use phones or switches nearby — call 1-800-555-0199 from a safe distance.

Property Owner Responsibilities

Piping on your side of the meter is yours to maintain. Have buried customer-owned lines inspected periodically and repaired by qualified professionals.

Excess Flow Valves

An excess flow valve automatically restricts gas if a service line is severed. Ask us whether your service qualifies for one and what installation involves.

Ask about EFVs
See something, say something. Unpermitted digging near utility lines, exposed piping, or damaged markers? Report it at 1-800-555-0199 — you could prevent a serious accident.

One call. Zero surprises.

Make 811 the first step of every outdoor project — and brush up on gas safety while you're at it.
